Where is the next big spending?

Infrastructure companies typically hold long-term contracts with governments that define an allowed rate of return on their asset bases. Spending on infrastructure will expand asset bases to boost earnings, cash flows and dividends. As decarbonisation efforts ramp up, green infrastructure projects will be plenty and experience significant scale. This will be a key tailwind for well-positioned infrastructure players to undertake such generation-changing projects.

Decarbonisation is the order of the next few decades as governments work urgently to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, governments cannot do it alone. Going green is not cheap, and the IEA expects global spending on electricity systems to near triple by 2030 to be on track to achieve net zero outcomes by 2050. Infrastructure companies such as electric utilities and toll roads will be instrumental in mobilising private capital. Governments will likely work in partnership with these companies to execute various green infrastructure projects.

Why we like the fund

The Legg Mason Clearbridge Global Infrastructure Income Fund aims to provide income, such as dividends and interest, and long-term growth for investors. The fund looks to deliver a sustainable dividend yield range of between 4% to 6% on a historical basis, which helps provide an income for investors in the current low interest rate environment. It focuses on both regulated assets (defensive with higher income and low economic sensitivity) and user pay assets (growth with lower income and leveraged to GDP). It also aims to outperform the G7 inflation + 5.5% per annum over a market cycle by investing in global infrastructure companies.
